| One of the great things about the Island is that there really is a little something for everyone. That statement could not be truer than when you are looking for lodging. We have resorts. We have economy motels and we have hotels that are somewhere in between. We have bed and breakfasts, condos and houses in all shapes and sizes. But, just as important, we have been able to retain a few of our Island's original motels thanks to some wonderfully devoted people who have vision as well as compassion. The South Beach Inn is one of those little jewels. Originally named the Sea Grape Motel, South Beach Inn is still the same wonderful, ten-unit (plus) motel, only updated and cuter than ever.
New owners, Bill and Stacie Sutter, purchased the motel in July of 2004 and having been doing maintenance, remodeling and adding touches to make it their own ever since. Their remodeling includes a complete pool makeover and adding a fish cleaning station behind the motel, along with the regular maintenance that properties require.
The Sutters, being tired of the clouds and gray Seattle skies, came south looking for sun and in their trek, they stumbled into a life change they could never have imagined. It doesn’t take long in talking to the Sutters that you know they have no doubts that they made the right decision in becoming Island motel owners. Stacie says that even though their commitment means that one of them must be there at all times, it is a very small price to pay for being able to leave the pressures of the corporate world and continue life at a slower pace on this beautiful, sunny Island.
Along with keeping up with maintenance and renovations, the Sutters are busy letting potential visitors know how to find them and assuring them that the South Beach Inn is a great place for the whole family, including pets. Except for the two, one-bedroom suites, all units are equipped with kitchenettes which is wonderful for making snacks on demand, not to mention, helping to keep down the costs on the food budget. There is a bar-b-que pit by the pool, which is located directly in front of the motel so it makes it easy to keep an eye on the family and unlike most facilities, the South Beach Inn has a large, shady yard where children and pets can play.
We are fortunate to have such a diverse selection of accommodations on our small Island. We are even more fortunate that there are people, such as the Sutters, that feel that original beach properties are an important part of our Island community; they are truly unique and help retain the Island’s personality and charm.
So, if you’re looking for a place to stay, try the South Beach Inn and if you live here, stop in and tell the Sutter’s “thanks” for keeping the ol’ Sea Grape alive.
