The South Padre Island Community Foundation was created in May, 1992 and later became a community-oriented non-profit 501 C (3) Corporation. The organization was established to respond to long term as well as emerging needs of the Community. Acting as a catalyst and conveyer, the South Padre Island Community Foundation, under its broad and benevolent mandate, supports worthwhile projects and channels resources to appropriate recipients within the community.
The SPICF not only functions as a grant making institution but may function as a conduit to perpetuate the philanthropic intentions of the donors for the community’s benefit.
The SPICF is governed by a Board consisting of local volunteers and is assisted by an Advisory Board with members throughout the area. The goal is to provide assistance to local organizations and causes that make South Padre Island a better place to live as well as enhance the culture of the area for residents and visitors. These efforts are funded by donations, fund-raisers, and a well-managed endowment that will produce a steady flow of funds for the future.
One of the first projects the SPICF undertook was Whaling Wall #53 created by environmental artist Wyland in 1994 at the South Padre Island Convention Centre. One of the most recent endeavors was a grant made to the World Birding Center and both became conveniently connected with walk-way access that blends the environment of nature education at its best.
Some of the ways the South Padre Island Community Foundation raises funds are through events such as Bike - Fest where its members roll up their sleeves and staff the ticket booths, selling thousands of tickets during the three day period. Bike - Fest in turn makes a donation to the SPICF from their profits. The Board also holds “An Evening with the Stars” where classic movies are shown, wonderful food abounds, and sponsors of the event arrive in limousines, walk down the red carpet with cameras flashing, and mingle with “Stars” associated with the movie of choice. A really fun time for all! Watch for info this Fall regarding this fundraiser.
The South Padre Island Community Foundation Endowment Fund was established in 2002 to hold and accumulate funds for the South Padre Island Community Foundation. The goal of the endowment is to provide a source of permanent funding for the organization. The principal of the Endowment is invested and a substantial part of the income it produces is used when making annual grants.
The fund is the result of donations, hard work and dedication of people who love the Island. You can help with these on-going efforts through donating time, money, or property to assist the SPICF achieve its many goals. Visit their website at www.spicf.org for more information.
