Gene Gore, a native Texan and dedicated surfer and ocean lifeguard has competed in surfing and lifeguard competitions nationally and internationally. He is a former Honolulu Ocean Safety Officer and worked for the famed Hawaii Water Patrol. He recently authored a book, "Surfing the Texas Coast". He has hundreds of documented and off-duty surf rescues (the most recent making front-page news here on South Padre Island!). While working at Galveston Beach Patrol and teaching group surfing lessons at Galveston College, Gene met Rachel-also an experienced ocean lifeguard and avid surfer. They became surfing partners and in 1998 were married--on surfboards of course. They chose to make South Padre Island their home because as Gene says, South Padre Island has the best surf in Texas. Their son Micah began surfing before he was a year old. Baby Melia will no doubt soon be on her own surfboard. Pictured above also is Micah's pal Max - another big surfing fan.

Lessons are held in shallow water near the jetty at Isla Blanca Park. Look for their flag and colorful shirts and surfboards. Safe, soft surfboards are used with safety leashes attached. They have never had an injury using the soft boards. The Gores are proud to say they have a 100% success rate, with every student getting on their feet.
