| New name, same great service and staff - BeachSide Inn (formerly Microtel) is now an independent, locally-owned hotel. Penny and Tom Gautreau, managers, have been with the hotel since it opened five years ago. They say they are excited to have the ability and luxury of being independent. Tom adds that they intend to stay and operate Beachside Inn for years to come, as it is now truly a part of the family. Tom's family also happened to be the original builders/general contractors of the hotel.
Tom and Penny grew up in McAllen and San Benito, and South Padre Island has been a favorite getaway for Penny's family since the 1950's, and Tom's family became property owners in 1974. The Gautreaus love the Island, its uniqueness and the change of pace - from the hustle of the high season to the relaxed atmosphere during quieter times. Tom says it amazing how far away you can get from the "real world" with just a drive over the bridge to beautiful South Padre Island.
Tom's brother Bill and his wife Pam share in the day-to-day running of BeachSide Inn. The family has a strong sense of community. They devoted 15 rooms for two months during the causeway repair to house fire, emergency and law enforcement personnel free of charge.
