Surfrider Foundation - South Texas Chapter
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches for ALL people, through conservation, activism, research and education. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 TchaptersT worldwide.

The first organizational meeting of the Surfrider Foundation – South Texas Chapter was a stunning success, with a packed house of Island and Valley families, many local businessmen, community leaders, city officials, and an impressive turnout of the local surfing community. Upper Texas Coast founding chairman Ellis Pickett flew in, along with representatives John Adams from the Coastal Bend and Keeton Turner from the Central Texas chapter. The entire community came together with the common goal of preserving and protecting our beaches, public beach access and waterways. South Texas Chapter was chosen as the name to encompass not only the coast from the Port Mansfield Cut to the Rio Grande River, but to also include the Rio Grande valley surfers and the river watershed. The local chapter is in a unique position here in the valley to be not only an international chapter with members across the border and water quality testing along the Rio Grande and rivermouth at the Tex/Mex border, but the member base is nationwide as many are visitors from across the country.

Membership in the Surfrider Foundation is open to anyone who has a desire to protect the South Texas Coast. By keeping up with local issues, Surfrider members strive to preserve our coastal environment by participating in contacting political representatives concerning coastal issues, volunteering at events such as beach clean ups and dune restorations and attending Chapter meetings.
