| International Passenger Flights return
to Island’s Airport
After a twenty year absence, international passenger service has returned to the Island’s Airport. AeroMexico non-stop flights to Monterrey’s Mariano Escobedo International cost less than $200 with advance purchase. Passengers can connect in Monterrey on AeroMexico to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Queretaro, Bajio Leon, Tampico, and Veracruz for as little as $287 to $334, plus taxes and with advance purchase.
According to the City of Brownsville’s Director of Aviation, Larry A. Brown, bringing international passenger service back to BRO was a six year struggle heavily based on scientific airline data developed to demonstrate why the flights would be profitable. Brown called the competition among the five area airports intense. Michael Jones, who does the airport’s marketing and air service development, said “Brownsville was out spent and often out maneuvered by competing airports, but when it came to an airline’s final decision of which airport to serve, it was the professional data and our award winning marketing that won.”. BRO has won more than two dozen local, state, national and international marketing awards over the past five years. Brown and Jones both credit their marketing for growing BRO’s service from three daily flights in 2004 to more than ten in 2009, plus attracting two world class carriers, American in 2009 and AeroMexico this year.
“The entire catchment area is underserved because of five, very good, competing airports located within 60 miles.” said Jones, adding “All the airports are fighting for the same thing…more flights to more destinations.” You can make reservations at www.flysouthpadre.com
