When the South Padre Island Chamber first organized the Laguna Madre Education Foundation in 1996, Chamber members struggled to fund the scholarship program by organizing garage sales and passing collection boxes at the Friday night fireworks displays.
In 2000, when the Chamber of Commerce added new staff and revenue sources, the Board of Directors decided to redirect a portion of the proceeds from their Annual Meeting and Gala to their Foundation’s scholarship fund. No more garage sales, no more collection boxes! Today, the annual event is known as Gala and Scholarship Fundraiser.
Since 1996, when the first $1,000 scholarship was presented, the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce has funded over $275,000 in scholarships to Port Isabel High School graduates.
Because of our Chamber Members, our Community, and the success of the Gala, both the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce and our Laguna Madre Education Foundation remain strong, and continue to be committed to the future education of Port Isabel High School students.
